The last day of the year. We got dropped off at the beach for several hours and Alan and Vincent made their way to Girona to conduct some business. Most of the story of this day will be told in photos.
Call me vain, but this picture of me was too good to leave out!
What a difference a few days can make. Finally used to the eight-hour time difference, I was up for running races against Zephyr. It felt great to get some exercise.
And Jon and Zephyr actually made a little progress on their sand castle.

Jubi looks like she was doing a little yoga...

But she was actually planning mischief. Here she is, in timeout.
Don't tell Zephyr she looks all too happy to be in solitary confinement.

After the requisite three minutes, she was able to rejoin the family.

Lunch! Cheese sandwiches and freshly squeezed orange juice.
I do find it somewhat ironic that here we are, halfway across the globe, eating wheat and cheese, the very diet I love but try not to overdo while at home. But the cheese was manchego! And look at that crusty bread!

They have special centralized trash bins for organic waste to make compost. How cool is that? Jon actually opened one and smelled it. He wouldn't recommend replicating the experience.
Jon felt nothing says "Europe" like a baguette across one's lap.
Then, the New Year's Eve fun began.
Zephyr was excited about the new "do" Godfather Alan helped him create.
Much of the evening was spent eating. We had starters with cava, then a many-course meal, which everyone helped create.
Somehow I ended up at the kids' table, but that was okay.

Jubi's new friend gave her a "blingy" new hairstyle as well...

...but she preferred to wear her barrettes on her fingers.
They bought special surprise bags for the kids.

Believe it or not, there is a Zephyr in there!
Between each course, there was talking, drinking, and, of course, smoking, so the evening stretched out in a pleasant, relaxed way. At midnight we were eating hot fudge sundaes for dessert, and then there was hugging and kissing all around. A few folks went for one last dip in the hot tub. Our family went to bed after that, while some stayed up late watching Dutch TV. It was an interesting New Year's Eve.

I had to post this so I wouldn't forget. I was explaining the organic matter trash receptacle to Grady and he said: "Jon, Jon, Jon -- he always has to be thinking about planting. " :)
Nora,
I decided to finally check in to your blog... Wow, you guys are so adventurous. :-)
Regarding "It always makes me laugh when I see Zephyr pulling the "double thumbs up" sign that was my father's trademark when I was growing up. Zephyr rarely sees him. Is it genetic?"
Yes, actually it is genetic. It's called epigenetics. Things your father did even before you were born were coded on those DNA strands. In a DNA model with licorice used on as the long outside, twisty strands. Can you tell I teach science K-3 or what?
Any way look up epigentics it's fascinating. And BTW, all the stuff you are doing for your kids now--your actually having an effect on your grandchildren before they are born! Too cool!
Much happiness to you.
Cass
