Jon enjoys spending New Year's Day setting the tone for the coming year. We enjoyed starting 2010 with a hike in the cool mountain air.
Signs like this would surprise us. Seemingly we were on a dirt-and-gravel road in the middle of nowhere, but then, there would be indications of civilization.
Another in-the-middle-of-nowhere surprise- a pen of donkeys.
Jubi was going to try to feed a donkey, but threw her apple core at the last minute.
She was brave enough to touch this one's nose, though.

The kids did a great job walking up the mountain, but needed to be carried most of the way down.
The physical activity was very welcome. Jon and I came here with great intentions of keeping up our workout routine, and although he's followed through with it a few times, I have to admit that I haven't at all. At first, the mornings were just too hard to face. It was all we could do to just stay upright and keep our eyes open. We've now adjusted to the time difference, but there are still too many easy reasons to let it go. It's cold in the mornings, there is no good place to do it, we are preoccupied with keeping the children quiet so that the rest of the inhabitants can sleep in peace. I'm not too worried about waistline damage control, as my caloric intake seems to have naturally decreased in tandem with my lack of activity. Certainly a few weeks back into our regular life will have us back in "game shape."
Happy New Year!
