"I have to warn you about something. I think Zephyr has entered the 'why' phase." "I noticed a couple of 'why's' this morning," Jon agreed. We were walking about ten feet behind Zephyr, who was peddling his trike quickly along the sidewalk. With a sigh, we grasped hands.
I had hoped that we might bypass this stage, but Isadora was upbeat when I expressed my dismay. "That's a very important stage," she told me. "It's a sign of intelligence."
In honor of Zephyr's IQ, then, here is a sampling of the "why's" we've encountered in the last 36 hours.
Why do people move their eyes?
Why is Jubilee pooping?
Why do you have dye on your hands?
Why doesn’t Jubilee wear a drool bib at night?
Why doesn’t she need one?
Why can’t frogs bite?
Why doesn’t this dollhouse have a mailbox?
Why are toothpicks sharp?
Why don’t we poop outside?
Why can’t I use my flopper to knock things off of shelves?
Why don’t we want everything on the floor?
Why don’t you want me to play with the computer?
Why do you want me to close the computer?
Why am I too little to pee pee without standing on my stool?
Why can’t we buy these grapes?
Why do they put yucky things on grapes in Chile?
Why are we buying two pineapples?
Why aren’t we buying five?
Why would we cover our poop if we were camping and we pooped outside?
Why do plants eat poop?
Why is that fan moving like that?
Why is Barney’s name Barney?
Why is Barney a dinosaur?
Why can’t I hit your arm?
Why can’t I hit your shoulder?
Why doesn’t my winter hat provide shade?
Why is Tigger a tiger and not a monkey?
Why is this a weedwacker?
Why are my hands dirty after I dig holes?
Why don’t we have any cheese?
Why is it my bedtime?

Oh, man! You are getting back some of your own! I think Isadora is right and the "why phase" is a sign of intelligence. More specifically, he's developing a new, more spohisticated understanding of cause and effect. I know it can wear on your nerves. But isn't it kind of fun sometimes too, to think up answers that are both true and understandable for him?
PS Love the "see no evil" picture.
well said Chris! yeah, maybe a little human development refresher can make the experience of WHY a bit more intellectual for the grown ups around :)
